Abstract

The article presents a comparative analysis of units of measurement in English and Uzbek from cognitive-semantic and discursive perspectives. The main objective of the study is to examine a unit of measurement not as a ready-made metrological term, but as the result of processes involving the perception and comparison of quantitative differences in reality, categorization, social standardization, conceptualization, and linguistic representation. Using a qualitative approach, the study analyzes the English units meter, mile, yard, foot, and inch and the Uzbek units metr, kilogramm, qarich, qadam, gaz, and tanob, as well as figurative uses such as to go the extra mile and bir qarich yer. The theoretical framework draws on the views of Rosch, Lakoff, Langacker, Fillmore, Kubryakova, and other scholars concerning categorization, prototypicality, conceptualization, and frame semantics. The findings demonstrate that units of measurement represent an intersection between universal cognitive needs and culturally specific experience. The article proposes an analytical approach based on the sequential consideration of objective properties, perception and comparison, cognitive categorization, cultural standardization, linguistic conceptualization, and discursive realization. This approach is interpreted not as a strictly linear structure, but as a set of interconnected analytical stages that help explain the formation of measurement meaning and its subsequent semantic development.
