Abstract

The article analyzes the functioning of the dash in contemporary English literary prose, where it extends beyond conventional syntactic norms and acquires semantic-stylistic, communicative-pragmatic, and text-forming functions. Drawing on textual examples, the study examines the use of the dash to separate parts of complex sentences, provide explanations, signal shifts in speech perspective, and emphasize detached constructions.
