This article examines the complex ethnopolitical and ethnocultural processes in the Lower Amu Darya basin and along the southern coast of the Aral Sea. Particular attention is paid to parallel ethnonyms, tribal structures, and interethnic relations among the Uzbek, Karakalpak, Turkmen, and Kazakh populations. The article provides a historiographical overview of interpretations of the interaction between nomadic and sedentary populations in the Khorezm oasis across various scholarly traditions.
