Abstract

This article examines the relationship between genre stability and its transformations in the literary process of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The study aims to identify how historical genre models are preserved and reinterpreted within the structure of the contemporary novel. Three mechanisms of transformation of the novel form are identified: changes in the function of investigation, a renewed emphasis on the process of narration itself, and the incorporation of playful techniques into the composition of the work. Genre modification is proposed to be understood as a transformation of the relationship between the event, the mode of its presentation, the narrative instance, and the reader’s anticipated activity. The study concludes that normative models and individual genre solutions coexist and that genre memory is preserved within experimental narrative.
