Abstract

This article analyzes fixed patterns and the phenomenon of variation in riddles from the perspective of associative linguistics, based on a corpus of 957 riddles from the collection Uzbek Folk Riddles compiled by M. Abdurahimov. The corpus identifies such recurring patterns as “Little ...”, “I have one ...”, “... has ..., but no ...”, “Long, long ...”, “Under the ground ...”, “Without hands, without feet ...”, and “Not X”, and determines their frequency and associative functions. Three types of variation are distinguished: multiple texts with a single answer, a single text with multiple answers, and variants based on a common pattern. The analysis reveals that 81.4% of traditional riddles have variant answers, while the “Not X” pattern has become increasingly active in contemporary riddles.
