Abstract

The article presents a historical and geographical analysis of several ancient cities and irrigation networks of the Khorezm Oasis based on information provided by Abu Rayhan Beruni and medieval authors, as compiled in N. Norqulov’s work Beruniy va Xorazm (Beruni and Khorezm). Particular attention is paid to cities and settlements such as Kos (Kath), Fil, Gurganj (Jurjaniya), Khiva, Zamakhshar, Gurlan, Mizdakhkan, Dargan, Kurdar, Git, Varagdeh, and Madiminiya, as well as the Jardur, Qarik, Hazorasp, Qordaron, Khiva, Madra, Vadak, Bukh, and Kardor canals. Drawing on written sources, the study comparatively examines the location of cities in relation to river systems and irrigation networks, their commercial and artisanal activities, defensive systems, and the destruction or relocation of certain urban centers resulting from changes in the course of the Amu Darya River. The analysis demonstrates that water networks in the urban development system of Khorezm were among the principal geographical factors determining not only economic activities but also the emergence, development, and historical fate of cities.
