Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of Russian-French bilingualism in L. N. Tolstoy’s novel War and Peace. It examines the use of the French language in the speech of representatives of the Russian nobility in the early nineteenth century, analyzes the main situations in which French is used, the forms of code-switching, and its role in character portrayal. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between Russian and French linguistic codes as a reflection of the cultural identity of noble society. The study explores changes in the significance of French speech in the context of the Patriotic War of 1812, when the linguistic opposition acquired additional patriotic, cultural, and historical significance. It is concluded that bilingualism in the novel serves not only as a literary device but also as an important means of depicting the social structure, cultural orientations, and process of national self-determination of Russian society.
